Let’s get one last summer-break Fribrary in before school officially starts at OU.
The main assignment is to consider and come prepared to argue about the “alternative” theory/interpretation of “Top Gun: Maverick”. Namely <SPOILER ALERT!> that Capt. Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell dies at the beginning of the film–the rest is a death dream. Be it purgatory or an instantaneous burst of imagined end, the premise is our hero does not survive the Mach 10+ test flight.
Here is Sonny Bunch reviewing the movie and making this (perhaps the first) conjecture. Here is another proponent of the view.
For extra credit bring your own controversial interpretation of a movie whereby a character in the movie has actually died/dies in the film and the rest is but a dream.
Ideas For Fribrarians (recent additions – read at your leisure):
Three from Michael Huemer:
Morgan Housel offers 17 aspects of how people think.
The Three Idols by Scott Alexander. What would you ask them?
Good news, everybody! Nuclear weapons are likely not as bad as you think they are.
Think you know why people stand on escalators and walk on stairs? Steven Landsburg bets you don’t. Be sure to click at least the short video link to see him explain it directly.
Kevin Kelly offers 103 bits of advice on his 70th birthday. These are excellent.
Jams (weirdness every 11 years it seems edition):
